The recent accelerated development of the information management process has contributed to further technical developments in the construction industry. Moreover, the importance of M&R category is demonstrated by a case study through using palm fronds as a green material for concrete reinforcement to prove the positive impact of this category on the TBL of sustainability. The investigation and comparison results helped proposing suggestions which may improve the GPRS on the categorical level and the criteria level of M&R category. Towards improving the GPRS, this paper aims to investigate the GPRS and compare it with its peers BREEAM and LEED with a special focus on M&R category. Through investigating the GPRS and especially its Materials and Resources (M&R) category, some shortcomings were identified.
Recently, Egypt developed the Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS) in its first version in 2011. Accordingly, the negative implications of the construction industry have compelled many nations to develop green building rating systems in order to preserve the environment, promote the economic efficiency of using resources, and enhance the quality of citizens’ lives which are necessary aspects for achieving the triple bottom line (TBL) of sustainability. In addition, construction materials may contribute up to 50% of the total project cost. In the particular case of materials waste, the construction industry worldwide accounts for about 50% of global annual generated SW. This list includes new categories and subcategories with new weights, which suit the environmental challenges in Egypt.ĭespite the tangible contributions of the construction industry to social development and economic growth, it is known for its natural resources overconsumption and solid waste (SW) generation both of which have major negative impacts on the natural environment. A new checklist for new construction is constructed using data obtained from Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) decision making tool. Moreover, some surveys and questionnaires are conducted to take the experts opinion in the green field. This work presents a comprehensive study and comparative analysis between the existing green building rating systems for new construction in Egypt. This research introduces a new modified rating system for new construction with new weights to suit Egypt requirements. For example, waste management category which is one of Egypt’s challenges is ignored by TARSHEED. On the other hand, the rating system TARSHEED includes three categories only, namely energy, water, and habitat, to determine sustainable construction performances. Due to the significant cultural and environmental changes between Egypt and the United States, LEED rating system cannot be implemented in Egypt. GPRS and LEED are almost the same since GPRS is based on LEED.
There are several green building rating systems that are recently used such as: the LEED (Leadership in energy and environmental Design) rating system, Green Pyramid Rating System “GPRS”, and TARSHEED rating system. Accordingly, Egypt started to establish its own rating system to achieve sustainable development. Sustainability is essential for maintaining certain levels of life quality for next generations.
